Geodynamic Institute
of the National Observatory of Athens keeps the unique for Greece historical
earthquake records archive. The records on smoked paper are come from the
mechanical type seismograms installed in Greece since 1898. To ensure secure
storage conditions for the archive is of main interest, so within the frame of
the Project of Young Human Resources Support (1995) and with the financing of
the Greek General Secretariat of Research and
Technology development of a database was carried out. The database includes
the scanned images of usable records of Greek earthquakes for the period
1900-1960. Details about the seismographs, all the scanned images and lists of
the selected earthquakes have been included in an atlas and in two CD-ROMs.
Moreover software for the digitization of the scanned images developed in order
for the user to process the records by spectral analysis methods.
